Remembering Robin Gibb: 1949-2012 | News | BMI.com

In the final days of Robin Gibb’s life, fans and doctors believed he had slipped into a coma, unresponsive and unaware of the world around him. But for his brother Barry Gibb, a single moment would remain etched in his heart forever — the moment Robin opened his eyes and whispered a few words that would haunt Barry for the rest of his life.

Robin passed away in 2012 after a long battle with colorectal cancer and pneumonia. As he lay in his hospital bed, doctors told the family that there was no hope, yet Barry stayed by his side, holding his hand and speaking softly, hoping that somewhere, somehow, Robin could still hear him.

And then, it happened.

Robin opened his eyes. Looking straight into Barry’s, he whispered, “I love you, Barry.” Those four words, simple as they were, carried the weight of a lifetime. Barry would later say, with tears in his eyes:

“I wish I had said more. I wish I had hugged him longer. But I thought there was still time. There’s nothing more painful than being the last one left in a family.”

The bond between the Gibb brothers was more than musical. It was spiritual, emotional, and deeply rooted in shared triumphs and losses. After Maurice Gibb’s sudden death in 2003, and Robin’s passing in 2012, Barry became the sole surviving Bee Gee — a role he never wanted.

He has since shared that Robin’s final words gave him the strength to carry on with solo performances, even though “the music didn’t sound the same anymore.”
