“The Mavericks Drop out of 2025 Tour as Raul Focuses on Recovery — What’s Really Going On?”

Recently, the band The Mavericks announced they will not join the remaining 2025 tour dates because their lead singer, Raul Malo, must prioritize his recovery. This news was shared by their touring partner, Dwight Yoakam, on social media:

“Sadly the Mavericks will no longer be able to join us on the remaining 2025 tour dates as Raul focuses on his recovery.”

Underlying cause & background

The deeper reason behind this difficult decision lies in Raul Malo’s health. In September 2025, Raul disclosed that his cancer situation had “taken a turn,” citing concerns about a condition known as LMD (Leptomeningeal Disease), a cancer that affects the membranes surrounding the brain and spinal cord.

In his social media message, Raul shared that he would begin radiation therapy, and possibly follow with chemotherapy or complementary therapies. He wrote:

“It’s time to take your words to heart of resting & recovering… fight, recover, rest, repeat.”

Raul was first diagnosed with cancer in June 2024. He underwent surgery to remove tumors from his liver and colon. During that time, he attempted to balance treatment and musical work when his health allowed.

Response from bandmates & colleagues

Dwight Yoakam, the touring partner, posted a heartfelt message:

“Raul, I will deeply miss the exuberant and enormous musical joy …”

He emphasized that not only personally, but the thousands of fans who experienced those nights will remember the energy, passion, and light The Mavericks brought to the stage.

On The Mavericks’ official channels, the band stated they plan to return at the Big Blues Bender festival in 2026, and will release more details when circumstances permit. They also noted that shows like the one in Santa Fe currently have no rescheduled dates; ticket holders will be offered refunds or updates when available.

Meaning & emotions for fans

This news struck many Mavericks fans with disappointment — their music is more than entertainment, it’s passion and emotional connection. Having to delay or cancel shows means many must wait, perhaps uncertain about the band’s future at this moment.

Yet Raul communicates a stance of resilience: though uncertain of what a few months may bring, he and the band will embark on the treatment process “like every time: full steam ahead, then rest, then fight again.”

LMD — cancer of the meninges — currently lacks a cure. Treatment focuses on controlling spread, easing symptoms, and maintaining quality of life. Stepping away from touring is a necessary choice to allow Raul to prioritize health during this critical period.

Looking ahead

Fans now await new announcements about potential future shows when The Mavericks may return. For some, holding onto tickets (if possible to transfer to future dates) is a sign of faith in the band’s comeback.

Raul’s message to his fans is one of gratitude for the love and support from his family, friends, team, and fans. Even in adversity, he affirms he is not alone.

The story of Raul Malo and The Mavericks is no longer just about music — it’s a journey through illness, hope, and perseverance. Each music lover hopes that someday, when Raul recovers, the stage lights will blaze again and The Mavericks’ music will resonate more powerfully, more warmly, and with renewed hope.
