J.B. Mauney – The American Bull Riding Legend
James Burton “J.B.” Mauney, born January 9, 1987, in Charlotte, North Carolina, is widely regarded as one of the greatest bull riders in professional rodeo history. Known by his nickname “The Dragon Slayer,” Mauney gained fame for his ability to conquer some of the toughest bulls, including Bushwacker, Asteroid, and Air Time. He secured two PBR World Championships in 2013 and 2015, accumulating over 500 qualified rides in PBR Premier Series events.
Early Life and Career
Mauney began riding bulls at the age of three and purchased his first bucking bull when he was 15. He joined the Professional Bull Riders (PBR) in 2005 and quickly made a name for himself, earning the PBR Rookie of the Year title in 2006. In 2013, he became one of only three riders to successfully ride the legendary bull Bushwacker for the full 8 seconds, marking a significant achievement in PBR history.
Achievements and Records
Mauney holds the record for the highest earnings in bull riding history, amassing over $7.4 million throughout his career. He competed in 15 PBR World Finals and one National Finals Rodeo (NFR). In 2024, he was inducted into the PBR Ring of Honor and the Bull Riding Hall of Fame, solidifying his status as a legend in the sport.
Injuries and Retirement
After enduring numerous severe injuries over the years, Mauney announced his retirement in 2023 following a neck injury sustained during a ride in Lewiston, Idaho. He underwent emergency surgery and decided to step away from professional bull riding. However, he remains involved in the sport as the head coach of the Oklahoma Wildcatters in the PBR Team Series.
Current Life
Mauney currently resides in Stephenville, Texas, with his wife, Samantha Lyne, and their son, Jagger Briggs. He continues to stay connected with the bull riding community and inspires the next generation through his coaching role and community engagements.
