Despite being known for his high-octane energy, powerful stage presence, and anthems of freedom and resilience, Springsteen revealed that behind the spotlight was a darker narrative – one that began in his childhood and haunted him well into adulthood.

“I couldn’t get out of bed. I couldn’t speak. I thought everything was over,” he said of his lowest moments, describing the depression that hit him particularly hard after his father’s death.

His father, Doug Springsteen, suffered from severe mental illness and rarely expressed affection. Bruce described growing up in a home filled with silence, tension, and emotional distance—a legacy that would deeply affect his mental state even as his career soared.

“There were times I felt like I was drowning inside my own head,” Springsteen said. “I could sing about escape and freedom, but I couldn’t escape my own mind.”

What makes his story especially impactful is his decision to be fully transparent. Springsteen sought therapy, took medication, and channeled his struggles into powerful works like his memoir Born to Run and the album Western Stars, both raw portrayals of his internal battles.

He hopes his honesty can help others: “We should never be ashamed of our pain. The shame is in silence.”
