Connie Francis, Whose Ballads Dominated '60s Pop Music, Dies at 87 - The New York Times

CONNIE FRANCIS PASSES AWAY AT 87 — A Tragic End Amid a Bittersweet Comeback

On July 16, 2025, legendary singer Connie Francis died at the age of 87 at a hospital in Pompano Beach, Florida. Her passing came just two weeks after her 1962 hit “Pretty Little Baby” unexpectedly went viral on TikTok, introducing her voice to a whole new generation. In a twist of fate, just as she was rediscovered by millions, her health rapidly declined.

Earlier this year, Connie had suffered a severe pelvic fracture and was undergoing stem cell treatments while confined to a wheelchair. Despite showing signs of recovery, she was readmitted to the hospital in early July due to pneumonia and complications. On July 14, she lost consciousness, and two days later, the woman whose voice once defined an era, took her final breath.

Connie Francis was more than a singer. She was a survivor of deep trauma, a pioneer who broke barriers for women in pop music, and a voice that transcended generations. Her rendition of “Who’s Sorry Now” became an anthem in 1958 and launched her to international stardom. Behind the spotlight, however, were years of struggle — including a violent assault in 1974, legal battles, and long periods of silence.

As news of her passing spread, tributes poured in from fans, artists, and Broadway performers — especially from Gracie Lawrence, who is currently portraying Connie in the musical Just in Time. “She was fire, fragility, and fight — all in one voice,” Lawrence wrote.

Francis’s life story — from her father threatening to nail her to a microphone to force her first hit recording, to her lonely final days in a hospital bed — is a haunting reminder of the costs of fame. She died with her music suddenly alive again in the digital world, but with her body too weak to witness the miracle.

Her legacy endures.
