Andy Gibb’s Daughter Finally Opens Up: “I Grew Up Haunted by a Father I Never Knew”
More than three decades after the tragic death of pop icon Andy Gibb, his daughter Peta Gibb has spoken publicly for the first time. In a rare and emotional interview, she opened up about growing up without her father and the painful truths behind his death that no one in the Bee Gees ever discussed.
A Father She Never Knew
Born in 1978 at the height of Andy’s fame, Peta was the child of Andy and his then-wife Kim Reeder. The couple divorced shortly after her birth, and Andy was never a constant presence in her life.
“I didn’t grow up with him,” Peta said. “To me, he was just a name tied to sorrow.”
Only as she grew older did she begin to piece together who Andy was—through records, old interviews, and stories from the Gibb family.
“My dad didn’t die from drugs, like everyone thinks”
Peta stated:
“Most people assume he died from an overdose or suicide. But the truth is, his heart gave up. The myocarditis was the final straw. He was emotionally depleted.”
She emphasized that her father’s death wasn’t just about drugs—it was about being abandoned by the industry, the isolation, and the silence from those who once cheered him.
His Final Days Were Filled with Regret
Andy Gibb enjoyed global fame thanks to hits like “Shadow Dancing”, “(Love Is) Thicker Than Water”, and “I Just Want to Be Your Everything.” But behind the glamour was a man battling addiction and mental health issues.
“My mother once told me he wanted to come back—he wanted to be a father again. But he didn’t know how,” Peta shared. “Everyone saw Andy as the ‘baby brother of the Bee Gees,’ but he was one of the loneliest souls in music.”
The Letters He Never Sent
One of the most shocking revelations Peta made was that Andy had written letters to her but never mailed them. “My mother kept two handwritten letters from him. In them, he apologized for not being there and said he hoped someday I’d understand,” she said.
“I cried reading them. It was the closest I’d ever been to my father.”
A Comeback That Never Happened
Few people know that Andy was planning a musical comeback. He had completed rehab and started working on a new album. Barry Gibb once said, “Andy was on the way back. We were planning something beautiful.”
But his damaged heart couldn’t keep up. He passed away on March 10, 1988.
