Throughout George Jones’s tumultuous career, there have been numerous strange stories told by those who worked closely with him. But one night in a Nashville hotel in 1988 stood out — so eerie that a tour crew member later said he had to speak out, because “it was too chilling to keep to myself.”

According to the story, around 3 a.m., the crew member heard soft voices from George’s room. At first, he assumed George was on the phone — until he realized George was alone, and he was clearly speaking in two distinct voices: one deep and tortured, the other soft and pleading. Phrases like “You’ll never escape” and “But I still have my voice…” were repeated over and over.

When the tour manager knocked on the door, George calmly answered as if nothing was wrong. When asked who he’d been talking to, Jones reportedly smiled and replied:
“I was just talking to George Jones.”

That cryptic reply sent chills through the crew. Years later, George admitted that he often felt like he was “fighting another version of himself” — the man addicted to alcohol, pain, and running from reality. No one could ever confirm exactly what happened that night, but the tale became yet another haunting chapter in the life of a man whose inner demons were as powerful as his voice.
