Neil Diamond Nearly Became a Priest – How One Phone Call Changed Everything
In a rare and candid interview, legendary American singer-songwriter Neil Diamond revealed a surprising fact about his early life: he once seriously considered becoming a priest, before a life-altering moment steered him toward music.
While studying medicine at New York University (NYU), Neil found himself questioning the meaning of life and purpose. He spent hours in libraries and churches, pondering whether he was called to a life of service in the priesthood.
“I thought deeply about dedicating myself to helping others — maybe even as a priest. But then… music called my name.”
✦ A Call That Changed His Life
In his final year at NYU, Neil received a phone call from Columbia Records, offering him an opportunity to write songs professionally.
That single call changed everything.
He left university, abandoned his medical studies, and threw himself into songwriting.
The result? Timeless classics like “Solitary Man,” “Cracklin’ Rosie,” “I Am… I Said,” and of course, “Sweet Caroline.”
“In a way, I still serve people — just not through sermons, but through songs,” Neil explained.
✦ Faith Through Music
Though he never wore the collar, Diamond’s songs often reflect deep compassion, faith, and healing. His music resonates with spiritual undertones — about love, loss, and hope.
Now in his 80s and living with Parkinson’s, Neil says he has no regrets:
“If even one of my songs helped someone heal — then maybe I did fulfill that calling, just in a different way.”
