Neil Diamond’s Unexpected Involvement in a Church Scandal: What Really Happened

What The Jazz Singer Taught Me About Hollywood 'Romance' - The Atlantic

In recent years, multiple cases of clergy abuse have emerged across the U.S., and while most names involved are those of church officials, one unexpected figure surfaced in the media: Neil Diamond. Though the singer himself was not accused of wrongdoing, his name appeared in connection to a priest who was later convicted of child sexual abuse — sparking confusion and speculation among fans.

The connection stems from a case in Minnesota, where a priest convicted of abuse had been a vocal fan of Neil Diamond and reportedly used his music and public persona to gain trust from families in the community. According to the Survivors Network of those Abused by Priests (SNAP), the predator often played Diamond’s music at church events and sometimes claimed to be personally acquainted with the singer — a claim never substantiated.

SNAP later called on Neil Diamond to speak out and publicly distance himself from the priest, arguing that his silence might inadvertently contribute to the image that the offender was leveraging. Diamond’s team eventually issued a brief statement making clear that the singer had no personal connection to the man in question and was unaware of his criminal actions.

“Neil Diamond does not know this individual, nor did he ever authorize the use of his name or music in such a manner,” the statement read.

The situation underscores how celebrities can unintentionally become linked to scandals without any involvement, simply through association or public manipulation of their fame.

While Diamond was completely uninvolved, the incident remains a reminder of how widespread abuse scandals have touched even the most unlikely corners of public life — and how crucial it is for figures of influence to clarify their position when misused.
