Country music icon Kenny Chesney is mourning the loss of one of his dearest friends, Curtney Chinnery, known affectionately as “Big D.”

Chinnery passed away unexpectedly in early May 2025. The two shared a bond that extended far beyond music. Chinnery was not only a longtime friend but also a key part of Kenny’s island life in the U.S. Virgin Islands, where the artist often escapes for peace and inspiration.

Chesney shared a heartfelt tribute via his official social media accounts:

“We lost a gentle giant today. My friend, my brother, my family. Rest easy Big D – the island won’t be the same without you.”

Curtney Chinnery, a beloved figure on St. John, was known by many locals and tourists alike for his warm personality and unwavering friendship with Chesney. The pair were frequently spotted together around the island, and Chinnery often appeared in behind-the-scenes tour clips and interviews, quietly standing by the country star.

Fans across the globe have poured in their condolences, sharing memories and appreciation for the bond the two shared.

Kenny has yet to confirm any plans for a public tribute but is expected to honor Chinnery’s memory during his upcoming 2025 Las Vegas Sphere residency.

As Chesney navigates this personal loss, it offers a rare glimpse into the private world of a musician who, behind the spotlight, values loyalty, brotherhood, and deep connection.
